Georgia
Came to Stay

She arrived just before Christmas for what was supposed to be a temporary foster stay. Lisa knew better.

Prologue

The house is quieter now.

We notice it most in the places Georgia chose for herself: beside the wood stove, on the couch, halfway up the stairs where the sun came through the window, and near the front door in the afternoon light.

Those places were ordinary before she arrived. Then, for nearly five years, they were hers.

We returned to these photographs because we wanted to remember more than the sadness of losing her. We wanted to remember the whole life that came before it—the first Christmas, the warm rooms, the children’s games, the walks, the shore, the chip bags, and the steady look that made us feel as though Georgia understood every word.

Chapter one

A temporary arrangement

Lisa presented the plan as a temporary foster stay. That was not quite the whole plan.

December 22, 2021 · The day Georgia came home

Georgia came to us through the Brandywine Valley SPCA in West Chester, Pennsylvania. We believe she was five or six years old. A DNA analysis later confirmed that she was a full-bred American Bully.

We knew very little about her earlier life. We were told that she had been found as a stray somewhere around New Castle, Delaware, and had previously been used to produce several litters of puppies. Beyond that, her story was largely unknown.

Lisa believed that if she could simply get Georgia through the door, Brett would fall in love with her and want her to stay. The word “temporary” got everyone past the first decision. Lisa neglected to mention that she already had a strong opinion about the second one.

Within a couple of weeks, it was obvious Georgia was no longer visiting. In rescue language, we had become a foster failure: the foster arrangement “failed” because the dog found a permanent home with the people who were supposed to care for her only briefly.

It was the happiest kind of failure.

Chapter two

The places she made home

Georgia had an instinct for comfort.

The hearth became her winter address.

In winter, she loved the wood stove in our living room. She would settle on the rug near the brick hearth and let the warmth reach her. That spot appears again and again through different winters and Christmases.

The decorations change. The children grow. Georgia remains near the fire, perfectly certain it was lit for her.

“Next to us” was only a starting point.

Chapter three

One of the girls

June and Charlotte played beside her, lay on the floor with her, dressed her up, and treated her as though she were one more girl in the family.

Georgia let them.

That trust says more about her than any description could. She could look imposing to someone who did not know her. She generally did not like other dogs. But with her family—and especially with children—she was peaceful, calm, and remarkably patient.

Lola, Brittany’s smaller pit bull, was one of the very few dogs Georgia tolerated: a small exception to one of Georgia’s strongest opinions.

Chapter four

Broadkill Beach

The house beside the Delaware Bay became another place Georgia knew as home.

She enjoyed going to Delaware and relaxing there, but she was not much of a water dog. The beach did not transform her into a surf-chasing retriever, and we never needed it to.

When the rest of us went down to the sand, Georgia was often happy to remain in the house with Pam—Grandma—until we returned. Her favorite place there was Grandma’s expensive couch. Georgia approached it with the confidence of someone who understood that the finest seat in the house had been selected for her in advance.

She did walk on the bay beach. Yet even there, she looks most like herself when she is simply sitting, watching, and being near us.

Chapter five

A life measured in ordinary days

Close was the preferred distance.

The heart of Georgia’s life is not in a single event. It is in the accumulation of ordinary days.

She loved food with complete sincerity. She served as the household’s expert pre-cleaner of plates before they entered the dishwasher. She could hear the crinkle of a potato-chip bag from another room.

When someone held even the smallest morsel, Georgia produced extraordinary eye contact: calm, direct, and persuasive. She only had to look at you long enough for you to reconsider whether you truly needed the entire sandwich.

Visitors received another kind of instruction. Georgia rubbed her face and eyes against their legs until they understood that ear scratches were required. She could be intimidating at first glance, but she loved people. Once someone belonged in the room, Georgia made sure they knew their role.

A living mark

The look that became a logo

One portrait captured Georgia’s attention so clearly that Brett used it as the basis for the Dexterity Digital logo. The finished emblem translated her face into illustrated lines, but kept the expression everyone recognized: steady, intelligent, and impossible to ignore.

Long before we imagined a memorial, Georgia’s likeness had already become part of something Brett built.

The look

There is comfort in that continuity. The dog who arrived watchful and uncertain became completely at ease in the geography of her family. She knew where the sunlight would fall, where people gathered, which sounds might mean food, and which rooms were warmest in winter.

We gave Georgia a home, but that sentence is only half the story.

She changed what home felt like. She made the rooms warmer, the couch more crowded, the dishwasher routine more efficient, and every chip bag more consequential.

Lisa called it temporary.
